Back in the day, exfoliation was known to be mostly physical (I see you St Ives) but the popularity of “toners” have made us realize there are other ways. However, these toners are chemical exfoliants you apply with just a cotton pad or hands and go on your way, but there are times I crave that deep scrub (safely) which is why I reach for them occasionally.
Some of the benefits of physical exfoliation include;
- It gently resurfaces the skin (if you don’t use an abrasive one or overdo it)
- Helps to refine skin texture
- Creates a perfect, smooth canvas for make-up application and easier “penetration” of serums
- May help with pigmentation concerns
I have two physical exfoliants in my stash; the Jan Marini Exfoliator Sugar Cookie – a “smooth”scrub that does not strip your skin. Smells like cookies and combines 3 forms of exfoliation (chemical) glycolic acid, (physical)polylactic acid beads, and (enzymatic) bromelain, papain. It also contains a cocktail of antioxidants. This is a limited edition product but there are many similar products on the market. The other one is the Earth from Earth Face Exfoliant – a powder scrub that lathers when it comes in contact with water. A balancing blend of botanicals and minerals formulated with ginseng, pineapple and liquorice extract, green earth clay and camu camu powder.
As with any exfoliant, you need to be careful. If you want to use physical exfoliants, here are some points to note;
1.Always apply scrub to clean damp skin. Scrubbing dry skin will lead to injury.
2.Scrub for about 15 to 30 seconds in a gentle circular motion and use once a week at most.
3. Rinse with warm water and double up on hydration.
4. Do not use if you have active acne or sensitive skin.
5. Don’t forget your sunscreen.
I also use physical exfoliants on my body and currently using the Baby Buff’d by TPH by Taraji. This leaves my skin soft and smooth and it is great if you have bumpy skin. The same rules apply for body exfoliation.
Other notable brands I love include Dr Lancer The Method Polish, Omorovicza Refining Facial Polisher, Indeed Labs Exfoliator II, ZO Skin Health Exfoliating Polish, First Aid Beauty Bump Eraser, Sanctuary Spa, Tree Hut and so many others to choose from.
Do you use physical exfoliants? What are your favourite brands?
